Turkish transit log - what's that?

Many of you have heard about the Turkish transit-log. When chartering a yacht in Turkey, the transit-log is an important document, which shall be written in a correct form. The skipper shall carry the transit-log document during the whole charter and show it on demand of the harbour's office or the coastal police.

What's that?

Yacht charter in Turkey and the transit-log: in fact, the transit-log is a document, which allows the yacht and the crew to sail in the yachting region between Hopa and Antalya. The document shall be issued for each yacht charter with the route along the Turkish coast and contains information about the yacht, the owner, other crew members as well as the planned cruising route. This document is normally issued just before the charter and shall be certified by the harbour's master's stamp of the initial port. There is a moderate fee for the certification of the transit-log. That is why the charter client normally has to pay an additional amount on spot at check-in.

Why is the transit-log fee different in different charter companies?

There can be two answers to this question:

1. Some charter companies take more for transit-log formalities than others, although offering the same service. That means: they undertake the same actions like the others in order to get the transit-log document.
2. Some charter companies take more than others, but offer additional services, whoch are included into their transit-log fee, such as the end cleaning (to be paid extra in other companies), bed linen and towels and so on.

In case 2, you are lucky to get more service for the same money. But even if you have chartered a yacht in a company, which does not offer additional service within their transit-log fee, we recommend to rely on the experience of the charter company, pay the fee (usually, it does not exceed 100 EUR) and do not worry about any documents at all. You will be relaxed and ready to start your charter vacations with correct legal documents on board of your chartered yacht. It is really worth it!

When, where and who may demand the transit-log document during the charter?

The document about the transit-log shall be presented on demand of the port authorities of each new port, which you might enter during the charter. Even if you do not plan to enter any port at all, you can not set out to sea without the transit-log. It may be demanded by the coastal police at anchorage or even when the yacht moves. The coastal police (Sahil Güvenlik) is easy to recongnize by white motor boats with a wide orange coloured diagonal line on the sides.
